Date Nights on the Cheap

A night on the town with your significant other can be amazing, but it can also get expensive. If you’re on a budget, how can you show your partner a good time without breaking the bank? Catching dinner and a movie may be tempting, but there are many affordable ways have a wonderful time with your date. Remember, it’s not the price tag that makes dates memorable, but the quality of time you spend together. Here are some cheap ideas that don’t involve renting a dollar DVD or streaming movies online.

Be Creative

Creativity comes in all shapes and forms. You don’t have to be a professional artist to enjoy drawing, painting or sculpting something unique. Just taking the time to sketch can be a fun activity that you share with your partner. Are either of you musically inclined? Pick up your instruments (or voice) of choice and make some beautiful music together. If one of you is musically inclined and the other is not, you can always incorporate a drum, tambourine or shaker so you both can be involved in the activity.

Go Ice Skating

Take your partner to an outdoor skating rink in the winter, if you have one in your area. The ice rink is a romantic place with couples and friends riding around in circles under the evening sky. You can hold hands while you skate around and talk at the same time. This can be a bonding experience, even if one person is more experienced than the other. You can ride around the outside next to the edge of the rink and give your partner tips on how to navigate the icy terrain!

Take a Class

Look out for community classes in your area for dancing, yoga, art, cooking or a number of other possibilities. As far as pricing goes, these classes can range on a scale from free on up to hundreds of dollars depending on the teacher and the topic. Dance classes allow you to work together with your partner towards a specific goal, and can be a good test of how well you collaborate. A drop-in yoga session will not only stretch your muscles, but leave you feeling good about the time you spend together.

Go for a Hike

If you live in an area with a couple feet of snow on the ground in the dead of winter, this may not be the best option. A hike doesn’t necessarily have to be any more difficult than walking. Look for a trail guide for your area. If you and your partner are physically active, then an intermediate or advanced trail might be a good choice. For a more comfortable stroll, look for an easy trail. Throughout the hike, you can find several spots to sit, relax and enjoy the view!

Cook Together

Most date nights involve dinner at some point during the course of the evening. For people looking to save money, choosing a greasy hole-in-the-wall or fast food joint isn’t the best option. For the same amount you spend on a cheap restaurant, you can buy healthy ingredients and cook a meal together. Making the cooking process a collaborative effort also works as a good bonding experience. Decide together what kind of meal you would like to prepare, assign tasks and activate your taste buds. When the meal is complete, enjoy the fruits of your labor together.

The best dates nights don’t have to be extravagant. If the evening sky isn’t filled with light pollution or hazy clouds, then why not star-gaze in the grass. You can hold your partners hand and point out the constellations. If you don’t know any constellations, make up your own. Be as creative as possible while you envision imaginary lines connecting the stars to create anything your imagination may allow. Ask your partner what they see. Talk about topics relating to stars, space or planet earth. How does it all connect?

Go Bowling or Play Pool

Bowling alleys often run specials through the summer time, and they are also a good place to escape the frigid winter cold. This is one of the classic cheap date nights, because you can play two games each and still end up paying less than $10, including the shoe rentals. If playing a few rounds of pool sounds more intriguing, then rack em’ up. Find a pool hall or local bar with an open table. Healthy competition can be fun, while still allowing the opportunity for you to talk with your date.

Check Out a Local Sports Game

Tickets for minor league sporting events can be very reasonable for a cheap date night. Dress up in your best sports memorabilia and take your date to the baseball, basketball, football, hockey or soccer match. Have fun rooting for the same team, or take friendly jabs at each other while cheering for different teams. Offer a friendly bet, such as the person who chooses the winning team gets a backrub from the other person.

Have a Game Night

A fun game night could look different based on where your interests lie. A game night can include anything such as playing games of Wii bowling, cards or monopoly. Make sure your partner is engaged and having fun. Video games can bring couples together or alienate the other person, depending on the course of interaction. As long as you’re both involved, you can play games for the entire night or just play one game before you move on to a different activity altogether.
